How to use UKEntryCheck

UKEntryCheck is a fast browser-first guide built from the GOV.UK ETA guidance pages. It helps you sort your trip into one of three buckets: ETA likely needed, ETA not needed, or check visa rules.

How to get the best result

  1. Select the exact passport nationality you will use to travel.
  2. Choose the main reason for your trip to the UK.
  3. Answer the exception questions honestly, especially if you already have UK permission, will stay airside in transit, or live in Ireland and enter from the Common Travel Area.
  4. Open the official GOV.UK link shown in your result whenever you need a formal answer or want to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does this replace the official GOV.UK visa checker?

No. It is a faster first-pass helper. If your result says Check visa rules, or your situation feels unusual, use the official GOV.UK checker.

What does “ETA likely needed” mean?

It means your passport nationality appears on the current ETA list and your trip purpose matches one of the visit types GOV.UK says can fit an ETA.

What does “ETA not needed” mean?

It means your answers match a common official exception, such as British or Irish citizenship, an existing UK visa or immigration permission, airside transit without border control, or another listed exception.

What if I have more than one passport?

Run the check using the passport you will actually travel with. The result can change depending on the document you present.

What if I live in Ireland?

There is a specific GOV.UK exception for some people who live in Ireland and enter the UK from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man. UKEntryCheck flags that route, but you should still read the official document rules carefully.

Can an ETA guarantee entry to the UK?

No. GOV.UK says an ETA lets you travel to the UK, but it does not guarantee entry at the border.
